How the split calculator works

Pick laps or relay

Laps mode splits a track distance (400m to 10000m) into 400m or 200m laps for a target time. Relay mode splits a 4×100/200/400/800m target time into 4 legs, or summarises 4 leg times you already have.

Choose a pacing strategy

Even pacing keeps every lap at the same speed. Negative starts slower and finishes faster; positive starts faster and finishes slower — both by a ramp you set as a percentage of average pace.

Each row shows the lap split and the cumulative time, plus how it compares to world-record average pace for that distance and gender, when a ratified record is available.

Why pacing plans and relay splits matter

A target finish time alone doesn't tell an athlete how to run the race. Splitting it into laps turns a single number into a lap-by-lap plan that can be checked against a watch or a pacer during the race, and comparing those splits to world-record average pace gives a sense of how demanding the target actually is at each stage.

The negative and positive split ramps here are a simple linear model (a fixed percentage swing from the first lap to the last, renormalised so the total still matches the target exactly) — real elite races are rarely run on a perfectly linear ramp, and the world-record splits shown for comparison are the record's average pace per lap, not the record holder's actual (typically uneven) lap times. Relay legs split a target time evenly across 4 legs by default; entering all 4 actual leg times instead shows the total, average, fastest and slowest leg.

A negative split means running the second half of a race faster than the first — starting conservatively and finishing strong, which is generally considered the more efficient way to run distance races. A positive split is the opposite: starting fast and slowing down, often from going out too hard.

The ramp you set (as a percentage) is applied linearly across the laps: the first lap is offset by that percentage from average pace, the last lap by the same percentage in the opposite direction, with a straight-line interpolation between them. The whole set of splits is then rescaled slightly so the total still adds up exactly to your target time.

World-record holders rarely run perfectly even laps — many championship 1500m and 5000m records include a slow early pace followed by a fast closing lap. This tool doesn't have lap-by-lap splits for every world record, so it compares your plan to the record's average pace per lap instead, which is still useful context but not the record's real pacing pattern.

By default, the target time is divided equally across the 4 legs (e.g. a 3:00.00 4×400m target becomes four 45.00s legs). Entering all 4 actual leg times instead replaces the equal split with the real total, average, fastest and slowest leg from those times.

Yes — lap-by-lap splits are capped at 120 rows to keep the table readable and fast to render. That cap is only reached by unrealistic combinations (e.g. a marathon split at 200m laps), not by any standard track distance in this tool.
