THE BASICS

What is age grading?

Age grading is a WMA (World Masters Athletics) method that adjusts athletic performances for the athlete's age. It answers: 'If you were 30 years old, what time would you have run?' The percentage shows how close your performance is to the world standard for your age and gender.

The age factors used here are approximations of the official WMA 2023/2025 tables. For an official value, consult certified WMA calculators.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Age grading is a WMA (World Masters Athletics) method that adjusts athletic performances for the athlete's age. A high percentage means your performance is close to the world record for your age group and gender.

The formula is: percentage = (open-class world standard / age factor) / your time × 100. The age factor comes from official WMA tables and varies by event and athlete age. This calculator uses an approximation of those tables.

Using the WMA convention: ≥ 90% = world class, 80–90% = national level, 70–80% = regional level, 60–70% = local level, < 60% = recreational. Most regular runners score between 50% and 70%.

Physical capacity changes with age: it peaks around 25–30 and then gradually declines. Age grading lets a 60-year-old objectively compare their performance against a 25-year-old by accounting for age-related decline.

This calculator is an approximation of the WMA 2023/2025 tables, based on piecewise-linear interpolation of age factors. Results may slightly differ from official WMA calculators which use the full factor tables. For certified results, use the official calculator on the WMA website.
