Implement Weights Reference
Throwing implements get lighter as athletes get younger or older: World Athletics sets the U18, U20 and senior weights, and World Masters Athletics extends the table down through the five-year masters age groups, adding the weight throw from M35 onward.
U18/U20/senior weights are set by World Athletics Technical Rules; masters weights (M35 and above) are set by World Masters Athletics — always confirm against the current rulebook before a sanctioned competition.

How to read the implement weights table
Enter an age or pick a gender
Type an age (10–100) and the tool derives the competition age group automatically, or pick a gender and an age group directly from the dropdown.
Read the implement cards
Each card shows one implement's official mass for that age group and gender, with a WA (World Athletics) or WMA (World Masters Athletics) badge showing which rulebook sets it.
Check the full table when needed
Open the collapsible full table to compare every age group side by side for the chosen gender — useful when checking a multi-age relay or a masters meet with several categories competing together.
Why implement weights change by age and gender
Shot put, discus, hammer and javelin are all thrown with a fixed implement mass set by rule rather than scaled continuously to an athlete's size or strength. World Athletics Technical Rules TR32–TR36 set the senior, U20 and U18 weights; World Masters Athletics extends the same principle into masters competition, stepping the weights down every five years from age 35 to keep the events fair as strength and technique change with age.
The weight throw only exists as a masters and indoor event — it is not part of the standard outdoor senior, U20 or U18 programme, which is why it has no entry for those categories in the table. Weights are given in kilograms, except javelin which is also commonly quoted in grams (0.6 kg = 600 g).
Implement weights — FAQ
World Athletics and World Masters Athletics set lighter implements for younger (U18, U20) and older (masters, from M35) age groups to keep technique and injury risk appropriate as athletes develop or age, while senior athletes throw the heaviest, standard implement.
Senior men throw a 7.26 kg shot put; senior women throw a 4 kg shot put. The same senior weights apply to discus (2 kg men, 1 kg women), hammer (7.26 kg men, 4 kg women) and javelin (800 g men, 600 g women).
The weight throw is contested from the M35 masters age group onward (and at some indoor meets); it is not part of the standard outdoor senior, U20 or U18 programme.
No — World Masters Athletics steps the weights down at several points (for example M35–M45, M50–M55, M60–M65, then individually from M70), so a lighter implement is used the further into the masters categories an athlete competes.
U18, U20 and senior weights come from World Athletics Technical Rules (TR32 shot put, TR33 discus, TR34 hammer, TR36 javelin); masters weights (M35 and above) come from the World Masters Athletics Rules of Competition. Always check the current rulebook before a sanctioned competition, as rules are periodically revised.
