3000 m
Seven and a half laps, started from a curved line without lanes. The distance rewards a strong aerobic base and the ability to change pace over the last two laps, and 1500-metre runners stepping up meet 5000-metre runners stepping down. The women's 3000 metres was an Olympic event from 1984 to 1992 and a World Championships event until 1993, after which the 5000 metres replaced it. Outdoors it survives on the Diamond League and meeting circuit, where it is often run as a fast early-season test; indoors it is still a championship distance for both men and women. Times are recorded to the hundredth, and the best of them are close to eight minutes.
