Triple Jump
Three linked phases from one sprint down the runway: a hop, landing on the takeoff foot; a step, landing on the other foot; and a jump into the sand. Men usually take off from a board about 13 metres from the pit, women from about 11 metres, and the distance is measured from the board to the nearest mark in the sand. Crossing the board or using the wrong foot in either phase is a foul. The phases are rarely equal; most jumpers spend a little more of the distance on the hop and the jump than on the step. A tailwind above 2.0 metres per second makes the jump wind-aided, valid as a result but not as a record.
