Decathlon
Ten events over two days for men: 100 metres, long jump, shot put, high jump and 400 metres on the first day, then 110 metres hurdles, discus, pole vault, javelin and 1500 metres on the second. Marks become points through the World Athletics tables adopted in 1984 and the highest total wins. The 100 metres, long jump and hurdles carry wind readings; a score is record-eligible only if the average tailwind across them is 2.0 metres per second or less. The Olympic champion is traditionally called the world's greatest athlete. Scores above 9000 points are rare, and a no-height in the pole vault has ended more title bids than any injury.
