
Letesenbet Gidey
Letesenbet Gidey, born on 20 March 1998, is an Ethiopian long-distance runner who became the first athlete ever, male or female, to hold the 5000 m, 10,000 m, and half marathon world records simultaneously. In the 10,000 m, she is the 2022 World champion, 2020 Tokyo Olympic bronze medallist, and 2019 World silver medallist.
Gidey holds the world record in the half marathon, set in October 2021 in her very first race at the distance, breaking the previous mark by more than a minute. She also holds the world best in the 15 km road race, becoming the first woman to break the 64-minute, 63-minute, and 45-minute barriers in the half marathon and 15 km respectively. She recorded the fastest women's marathon debut in history at the 2022 Valencia Marathon.
Gidey's talent was evident early on, as she won the junior race at the 2015 World Cross Country Championships at age 17 and retained the title in 2017 before earning bronze in the senior race in 2019.
