Jurgen Schult is a German former discus thrower, born in Amt Neuhaus. Competing for East Germany during the Cold War era, he became one of the most formidable throwers of his generation and left an indelible mark on the event with a single extraordinary performance that would endure for decades.

Schult set the world record in the discus with a throw of 74.08 metres in 1986, a record that stood until 2024, making it one of the longest-standing records in track and field history. He won the Olympic gold medal at the 1988 Seoul Games, confirming his status as the premier discus thrower of his era. He was also a member of the SC Riesa athletics club.

Schult's legacy is defined above all by the longevity of his world record. For nearly four decades, no thrower in the world could surpass his mark, a testament to the extraordinary nature of that 1986 performance. His dominance during the late 1980s and the enduring quality of his record place him among the most iconic figures in the history of throwing events.
