Dean Starkey

Dean Starkey is an American pole vaulter born on March 27, 1967, in Park Ridge, Illinois. He achieved a personal best of 5.92 metres and won a bronze medal at the 1997 World Championships, establishing himself among the world's elite vaulters.

Starkey competed for the Illinois Fighting Illini track and field team and broke the record for most vaults over 19 feet by an American in 1994, clearing the barrier seven times that year. His consistency at heights above 5.79 metres demonstrated exceptional technical ability.

His World Championship bronze medal represents the highlight of his international career. Starkey's combination of collegiate success at Illinois and subsequent World Championship podium finish established him as one of America's premier pole vaulters of the 1990s.
