Barshim won World Championship gold three times, at the 2017 London, 2019 Doha, and 2022 Eugene editions. At the Olympics, he shared the gold medal at the 2020 Tokyo Games, holds two silver medals from London 2012 (upgraded after a disqualification) and Rio 2016, and earned a bronze at the 2024 Paris Olympics. He was also the Asian Indoor and World Junior champion in 2010, and won gold at the 2011 Asian Athletics Championships and Military World Games.

Barshim uses the Fosbury Flop technique, jumping off his left foot with a distinctive backwards arch. His brother Muamer is also a high jumper. With four Olympic medals including gold, Barshim is widely regarded as one of the finest high jumpers the sport has ever produced.
