Heike Drechsler
Heike Drechsler is a German former track and field athlete, born on 16 December 1964 in Gera, Germany. She represented East Germany and later unified Germany, and is widely considered one of the most successful long jumpers of all time. She remains the only woman to have won two Olympic gold medals in the long jump, triumphing in 1992 and 2000.
A former world record holder, Drechsler ranks third on the all-time list with her legal best of 7.48 metres, set in 1988. Her wind-assisted jump of 7.63 metres at altitude in Sestriere in 1992 remains the furthest a woman has ever long jumped under any conditions. Beyond the long jump, she was a formidable sprinter, winning Olympic medals in the 100 metres and 200 metres in 1988, earning silver in the 100 metres at the 1987 World Championships, and holding the world record in the 200 metres with 21.71 seconds set in 1986.
Drechsler's remarkable versatility across both jumps and sprints, combined with an Olympic career spanning from 1988 to 2000, sets her apart as one of the most complete female athletes in track and field history. Her ability to win Olympic long jump gold eight years apart is a feat of longevity that may never be matched.
