Tyson Gay, born August 9, 1982, in Lexington, is a retired American sprinter who competed in the 100 and 200 meters. His 100-meter personal best of 9.69 seconds stands as the American record and ties him for the second fastest time ever recorded over the distance.

Gay's defining moment came at the 2007 World Championships in Osaka, where he swept gold in the 100 meters, 200 meters, and 4x100 meters relay, becoming only the second man to achieve that treble at a single World Championships, after Maurice Greene. A four-time U.S. champion in the 100 meters, he also won the silver medal in the 100 meters at the 2009 World Championships with a time of 9.71 seconds, the fastest non-winning time in the history of the event. His career was marked by both brilliance and setback, including a severe hamstring injury at the 2008 Olympic Trials that hampered his Beijing Games performance.

Gay was named the 2007 IAAF World Athlete of the Year and is a two-time Jesse Owens Award winner. In 2013, he tested positive for a banned substance and received a suspension from USADA, which also resulted in the loss of his 2012 Olympic relay silver medal.
