Yunxia Qu
Qu Yunxia is a retired Chinese middle-distance runner, born on 25 December 1972 in Jinzhou District, China. She specialised in the 1500 metres and established herself on the world stage early in her career, winning a bronze medal in the event at the 1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona.
Her defining achievement came on 11 September 1993 at the National Games of China in Beijing, where she set the world record in the 1,500 metres with a time of 3:50.46. That record stood for 22 years until Genzebe Dibaba broke it on 17 July 2015. She also won gold in the 3,000 metres at the 1993 World Championships in Athletics, setting a Championship Record that is likely to stand permanently, as women transitioned to the 5,000-metre distance beginning in 1995.
Qu Yunxia's place in athletics history is secured by the extraordinary durability of her 1,500-metre world record, which endured for over two decades. Her performances during the remarkable 1993 season, alongside her Olympic medal the year prior, mark her as one of the most talented middle-distance runners of her generation.
