Tim Montgomery is an American former sprinter born on January 28, 1975, in Gaffney, South Carolina. Standing 178 cm and weighing 73 kg, he specialized in the 100-metre dash but had his career overshadowed by doping violations and legal troubles.

Montgomery initially achieved success legitimately, winning an Olympic silver medal in the 4x100 relay at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics and a bronze in the 100 metres at the 1997 World Championships. He won relay gold at the 1999 and 2000 World Championships and Olympics. In 2002, he ran 9.78 seconds in the 100 metres, initially considered a world record.

In 2005, Montgomery was found guilty of using performance-enhancing drugs as a central figure in the BALCO scandal. His records were stripped, and his 9.78 time was nullified. His official personal best now stands at 9.92 seconds. After athletics, he was convicted for involvement in check fraud and heroin dealing.
