William Deering is an American former pole vaulter born on July 20, 1971, in Michigan. He learned the event from his father William Sr., a two-time state high school champion, practicing in a backyard pit using poles his father made from sassafras trees.

Deering attended the University of Miami, where he was a two-time NCAA All-American and won five Big East Conference championships. His success at the collegiate level established him among the top vaulters in the country. In 1995, he won a silver medal for the United States at the Pan American Games in Mar del Plata, Argentina.

At the international level, Deering was a finalist at the 1997 IAAF World Indoor Championships and finished fourth at the 1998 Goodwill Games. His journey from backyard training to international competition demonstrates the unique paths athletes take to reach the elite level in pole vault.
