John McEwen is a retired American hammer thrower born on March 5, 1974, in California. He achieved notable performances in the event but had his career overshadowed by a doping violation. McEwen was a successful football player at North Medford High School in Oregon before attending College of the Redwoods and Morningside College.

McEwen initially won a bronze medal at the 2003 Pan American Games but was later disqualified due to a doping offense. At the 2003 American championships, he tested positive for tetrahydrogestrinone and was stripped of his second-place finish. He had also finished sixth at the 2002 IAAF World Cup. His personal best of 74.73 metres was achieved at the Mt. SAC Relays in April 2003.

Following his athletic career, McEwen settled in Ohio with his wife Denise and their two children. He works as a firefighter, continuing to serve his community in a different capacity than his years as a competitive athlete.
