Lewis initially played baseball through ninth grade before switching to athletics, graduating from Highlands High School in 1993.

Lewis emerged as a key member of American relay teams during the late 1990s. He finished third in the 100 metres at the 1998 Goodwill Games and won the 1999 US National Championships in the event. At the 1999 World Championships in Seville, he ran the third leg on the gold medal-winning 4x100 metre relay team while also reaching the 100m semifinals.

His greatest achievement came at the 2000 Sydney Olympics, where Lewis ran the third leg on the victorious American 4x100 metre relay team, earning an Olympic gold medal. His contributions to American sprinting during this era helped maintain the country's dominance in relay events on the world stage.
