How event equivalents work

Enter your performance

Pick your event and gender, then type your time or mark. The input format is the same as the points calculator: SS.ss, M:SS.ss or metres, depending on the event.

It's scored on the WA points scale

The performance is converted to World Athletics points with the Spiriev formula, on the 0 to 1400 scale shared by every track and field event.

Every other event is inverted to match

For each remaining event, the tool works backwards from that points total to the performance that would score it. Every line in the table then sits at one consistent level.

CROSS-EVENT SCORING

Why one points total maps to many performances

World Athletics points put a sprint, a jump and a throw on one scale from 0 to 1400. Combined events use the same system to add seven or ten disciplines into a single score. An event equivalent runs that scale in reverse: it starts from one performance's points and asks what mark in every other event would score the same.

The scoring formula is a power law fitted to real results, not a straight line, so equivalents between very short and very long events can look uneven. That comes from the official Spiriev tables, not from this calculator. Read the equivalents as a comparison of standard, not as a prediction of what an athlete would run or throw in another event.

The two performances score the same number of World Athletics points, so they sit at the same standard on the official Spiriev scale. It is not a prediction that an athlete who produces one would produce the other.

The points formula is a power law calibrated on real competition results, not a linear rule. A small gain close to a sprint world record is worth relatively more than the same percentage gain over a marathon, which makes the relationship between events less intuitive than you might expect.

Use it to compare standard across events. It says nothing about an athlete's physiology, training history or event-specific skill, and how well sprint speed carries into the long jump, for example, varies a lot from one athlete to the next.

No. The tool uses the same approximation as the points calculator, which can differ by a few points from the official Spiriev PDF tables in any single event. Chaining through points to a second event can widen that gap slightly.

Only events open to the selected gender are listed. Men run the 110m hurdles and women the 100m hurdles, so the other one never appears. An event whose formula returns a non-positive performance at that points total is also dropped.
