Carl Lewis, born July 1, 1961, in Birmingham, Alabama, is an American former sprinter and long jumper who won nine Olympic gold medals and one silver medal across four Olympic Games from 1984 to 1996. He also earned 10 World Championships medals, including eight gold, making him one of the most decorated track and field athletes in history.

Lewis dominated the 100 meters, 200 meters, and long jump from the early 1980s through the mid-1990s. He set world records in the 100 meters, the 4x100 meters relay, and the 4x200 meters relay, while his indoor long jump world record has stood since 1984. His 65 consecutive victories in the long jump over a decade remain one of the longest undefeated streaks in any sport. He is one of only two athletes to win gold in the same individual athletics event at four Olympic Games.

Lewis was voted World Athlete of the Century by the IAAF, Sportsman of the Century by the International Olympic Committee, and Olympian of the Century by Sports Illustrated. He is currently the head track and field coach at the University of Houston.
