Michael Johnson
Michael Johnson, born September 13, 1967, in Dallas, is an American sprinter widely regarded as one of the greatest and most consistent in the history of track and field. A four-time Olympic champion and eight-time World Championship gold medalist, he held world records in the 200 meters, 400 meters, and indoor 400 meters during his career.
Johnson remains the only male athlete to win both the 200 meters and 400 meters at the same Olympics, a feat he accomplished at the 1996 Atlanta Games. He is also the only man to successfully defend his Olympic title in the 400 meters, which he did at the 2000 Sydney Olympics. His dominance in the 400 meters was unparalleled: he broke 44 seconds in the event 22 times, more than twice as many as any other athlete, and holds numerous spots among the all-time fastest performances. He also held the US national records for the 200, 300, and 400 meters, and anchored the 4x400 meters relay world record team.
Known for his distinctive upright running style and remarkably short stride, Johnson defied conventional sprinting technique while dominating his events throughout the 1990s. Since retiring, he has worked as a television analyst for the BBC, covering athletics at multiple Olympic Games.
