Javelin Throw
A spear thrown over the shoulder after a run-up. The men's javelin weighs 800 grams and is at least 2.6 metres long, the women's 600 grams and at least 2.2 metres. It has to land tip first inside a sector of about 29 degrees, and the thrower may not cross the foul line or turn their back to the sector before release. The men's implement was redesigned in 1986 and the women's in 1999, with the centre of gravity moved forward so that it comes down sooner and lands more safely; the old 104-metre men's record was struck from the books as a result, and all current lists use the new specification. There is no wind reading.
